It’s been a few years since I bought a “new” LED flashlight. My current Every Day Carry flashlight is still the Fenix E01. The E01 sits in my jeans pocket most of the time, and I use it almost every day. It’s a great little light and weighs almost nothing. However, it is lacking in the power department. I looked around for a more powerful light, and finally decided on a Quark Mini AA from 4Sevens.

Fenix is becoming a formidable brand when it comes to mid-range flashlights. While they will never be able to compare directly against the likes of Surefire, their product range is now pretty competitive. The Fenix TK40 LED flashlight is the first Fenix to use Cree’s MC-E quad-die, a very powerful LED.

Recently, I thought I lost my EDC (every day carry) Fenix E01 LED flashlight. I ordered a replacement immediately, since it’s been a steady and reliable tool for me. As it turned out, I found my flashlight, so now I have 2 E01s in my arsenal. It’s always good to have a backup!

What makes a good EDC (every day carry) light? Here’s my criteria :
- rugged construction
- waterproof
- uses commonly available batteries
- small (pocketable)
- bright beam
- long lasting
The new Fenix L1T LED flashlight fulfils all of the above, and does more besides.

The choice between a flashlight with a traditional Xenon bulb and one with LED is a difficult one. LEDs are more durable and can last virtually forever but at a cost of reduced brightness. With the Streamlight Twin Task 2L, you can have the best of both worlds.

One of the most difficult decisions when choosing a flashlight for your Bug Out Bag or Every Day Carry is the battery type to be used. You typically want to have just one or two battery type across all of your equipment, including flashlight, radio and GPS.
The easiest type of battery to find just about anywhere in the world is the AA. But what about C and D batteries? You won’t believe how a thing this small can be so bright. The Photon II Micro LED keychain light is a favourite of many – just stick it with your car keys and you will always have it with you. It’s also light enough to hang on your ID card lanyard, or clipped to a belt loop.

The Gerber Infinity Ultra Flashlight makes great company for the Pocket Survival Pak. It’s near-indestructible, lightweight, and runs more or less forever.
