I know very few people who don’t carry around a cellphone (mobile phone) nowadays. Even my parents, who are in their seventies, have mobile phones for emergency purpose. We’ve seen enough disaster movies over the past few years to last a lifetime. And as we saw recently in the earthquake in Haiti, the results of earthquakes can be devastating. The San Andreas fault in Southern California has been mentioned or shown in a few different movies as the source of a large earthquake. Most recently in the movie 2010, we saw a large portion of Southern California fall into the sea.

We’re approaching the end of the 2009 holiday season – we have just one more long weekend next week, and then we’re into 2010. For a lot of people, this is a relatively quiet time at work and at home. It’s as good time as any to look back at our emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and do a quick check.

Once in a while, a book will appear that raises awareness about emergency preparedness to the mass population. This year, that book has been Emergency : This Book Will Save Your Life by Neil Strauss. It’s a bit more dramatic than educational, but it should make a good gift for this holiday season.
