We’re approaching the end of the 2009 holiday season – we have just one more long weekend next week, and then we’re into 2010. For a lot of people, this is a relatively quiet time at work and at home. It’s as good time as any to look back at our emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and do a quick check.

Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released the seventh annual Ready or Not? Protecting the Public’s Health from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism report. The report finds that the H1N1 flu outbreak has exposed serious underlying gaps in the nation’s ability to respond to public health emergencies and that the economic crisis is straining an already fragile public health system.

Once in a while, a book will appear that raises awareness about emergency preparedness to the mass population. This year, that book has been Emergency : This Book Will Save Your Life by Neil Strauss. It’s a bit more dramatic than educational, but it should make a good gift for this holiday season.

Seen anything good on TV lately? Other than reality TV series and procedural cop shows, there’s very little that’s interesting. One show that caught my attention a couple of years back was Jericho. Jericho was a drama about what happens when a nuclear mushroom cloud suddenly appears on the horizon, plunging the residents of a small, peaceful Kansas town into chaos, leaving them completely isolated and wondering if they’re the only Americans left alive. But in this time of crisis, as sensible people become paranoid, personal agendas take over and well-kept secrets threaten to be revealed, some people will find an inner strength they never knew they had and the most unlikely heroes will emerge.
