It’s been a while since I last changed my EDC (every day carry) set up. I am a minimalist at heart, so I don’t really want to carry a lot of stuff. For a long time, I was very happy with my combination of Victorinox Alox Pioneer and Arc AAA flashlight. Recently, my faithful, 5 year old Arc AAA unexpectedly died, so I had to find a replacement.

Other than getting another Arc AAA, the closest thing I found was the Fenix E01. The Fenix has throws out roughly three times the light of the Arc AAA, for one third of the price. Quality-wise, it’s not as good as the Arc. However, the Fenix is still built like a tank (with Type III anodizing) and should sustain heavy use (and abuse). The Fenix E01 is also slightly larger than the Arc AAA.

Since I was relooking at my EDC setup, I also considered a new knife or multitool. My Victorinox Pioneer has been replaced by a smaller Alox Swiss Army Knife, the Victorinox Cadet. The Cadet is slightly smaller and slightly slimmer than the Pioneer, but in terms of actual usage, it performs about the same.

So far I’m happy with the new setup, but of course I can’t promise that won’t change in the future!

Nice, with everyone carrying large lockbacks and must have steel it’s always nice to see the good old slipjoints, the alox range is a super deal for the money, this knife light combo is about as simple and practical as you can get and won’t look goofy like the wannabe ninjas and they’re stealth bomber looking benchmades, two thumbs up
