One of the most common problems faced in a disaster situation is Diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is the passage of watery stools, usually at least three times in a 24 hour period. The sad fact is, the majority of people who die from diarrhoea and related diseases is children. How dangerous is Diarrhoea? Well, your body could lose 1 litre of water per hour. If more than 10% of the body’s fluid is lost, then death occurs.
You can buy commercially packaged oral rehydration solutions (ORS) at pharmacies. What if you run out of ORS? Fortunately, it is quite easy to make your own oral rehydration solution from scratch. All you need are 3 common ingredients : sugar, salt and water. This is the simple recipe :
– 1 level teaspoon of salt
– 8 teaspoons of sugar
– 1 litre (around 5 cups) of clean, boiled water
