A large earthquake (8.2 magnitude) has stuck the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. A second, smaller earthquake followed. As a result, tsunami warnings were issued in countries around the Indian ocean, causing panic in many coastal areas. A wave surge of 1 metre was measured after the first quake.

The quake was felt in some parts of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Indonesia is no stranger to frequent earthquakes, since it lies on an active seismic belt on part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.
