It wasn’t that long ago that backup up your computer meant saving your files to a floppy disk. I remember backing up my IBM PS/1 PC took a whopping 28 floppies! Those days are long gone. While we are blessed with ever-cheaper, ever-larger hard disks, we are also facing challenges in finding suitable backup media. For me, I use a few USB thumb drives (now available in physical form factors smaller than your thumb) and a large external hard drive.

However, this is not a perfect solution. Most of the time, I keep my external drives right next to my computer. So if my computer goes missing, or something happens to my house, I will also probably lose all my backed up data.

A good solution for you to think about is to have some sort of an online backup. There are many online backup services available. Some are free, and some are paid. Almost all have a free trial so you can try them out first and see which suits you best. Idrive-E is one company that offers a free online backup service — for up to 2GB in storage. If you require more space, you can purchase additional space from 50GB all the way to 500GB, from just under US$5 per month. If you’re concerned about security (which you should be), Idrive-E offers an encrypted backup service.

Remember, backup early and backup often!
