The third Atlantic storm this year was officially named today. Tropical Storm Chantal formed between Bermuda and Massachusetts. Chantal is not expected to affect the United States, but will bring heavy rain to Canada.

The increase in storms and hurricanes in recent years is not just coincidence. Apparently, the number of tropical storms in the Atlantic alone have doubled in the past 100 years. The findings, published by Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, showed that the increases coincided with rising sea surface temperature, largely the byproduct of human-induced climate warming. From 1995 to 2005, the average was 15 tropical storms and eight hurricanes annually. 2006 was a relatively mild year, with only 10 tropical storms.

Entrepreneur and author Tim Ferris has an excellent video and blog post on how to travel the world with 10 pounds (in weight) or less. He follows a “buy it there” philosophy, where instead of packing everything for every common contingency, he allocates a US$50-200 funds to buy things locally. Of course, this doesn’t work in a bug out or TEOTWAWKI scenario. However, some of the gear he chooses for his travels will be great for a Bug Out Bag (BOB) or Personal Survival Kit (PSK).
