Despite the continuing media coverage of 9/11, and two major hurricanes last year (Katrina and Rita), most American cities and states remain unprepared for catastrophes, says the Homeland Security Department.

Some of the major shortcomings which were highlighted include :
– Failing to address emergency needs for sick, elderly or poor people unable to help themselves.
– Being too slow to issue disaster warnings and other alerts to the public.
– Failing to designate a clear chain of command during major disasters.

If you can’t depend on the government to be prepared, then it’s up to the individual to take necessary measures. So get your emergency preparations ready now – make up a 72-hour kit, get a good first aid kit, read a good book.
