Disaster! The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906

Today, 18th April 2006 marks the 100th anniversary of the great San Francisco Earthquake. The 1906 7.9-magnitude earthquake resulted in at least 3,000 deaths, left more than 200,000 homeless, and destroyed more than 28,000 buildings in the San Francisco fire that followed. Scientists estimate that there is more than a 60% chance of a damaging earthquake striking the region again in the next 30 years.
